Understanding the value of janitorial services

Understanding the value of janitorial services by Alan France The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system is seen by many across the globe as the premier benchmark of achievement in green building. Savvy building owners and developers recognize the importance of the janitorial function when it comes to LEED certification in existing buildings, as well as its impact on efficient and cost-effective facilities management. However, not as many realize the true value of bringing an environmental services partner into the planning of new construction or major renovation. When brought into the process early, a trusted janitorial consultant can actually help ensure many LEED requirements surrounding building maintenance are planned correctly upfront. These experts can make efficient building design and material recommendations that can save money in the long run, as well as help identify and prevent unforeseen—and potentially costly—issues that can appear...

A breath of fresh air for city's office workers

One way to improve employees' job performance is not only overlooked, it's invisible Written by -  Scott Frank Hundreds of books have been written about how to make employees more productive. Business schools offer courses on it. But an often-missed element in boosting workers’ performance is right under our noses—literally. It’s air. With Manhattan projected to need  up to 92 million square feet of new office space  over the next 25 years, building owners and developers should heed a Harvard-led study that indicates better indoor air quality lifts employee performance. The study reports that an office worker’s cognitive functions improve significantly when ventilation rates increase and levels of volatile organic compounds and carbon dioxide decrease. The impact of the study, published in October 2015, isn’t limited to new buildings. HVAC system upgrades, building renovations and interior redesigns can accomplish similar air-quality improvements in existi...

Beefed-Up NYC Energy Code Will Cut Carbon, Improve Buildings

July 18, 2016 Donna DeCostanzo New buildings in New York City—both commercial and residential—are about to get a whole lot more energy-efficient, thanks to improvements to the New York City Energy Conservation Code (NYCECC), green-lighted last week by the New York City Council. NYC 2016 The code governs new construction (and renovations) in the five boroughs. And thanks to this update, which builds upon improved national and New York State building codes, new commercial buildings will be almost 9 percent more energy efficient, while new one- and two-family homes will be as much as 32 percent more efficient, and solar-ready, too. For more details see this   post   from Chris Halfnight, our colleague at Urban Green Council. A mind-boggling 32 million square feet of built space per year, on average, has been constructed in the Big Apple over the last 15 years—nearly the size of 15 Empire State Buildings combined, annually. So the improvements the NYCECC will bring abo...

How Often Should You Clean Your Office Windows?

Cleaning Your Windows If you wonder how often your office windows should be cleaned, the answer is not as simple as you may expect it to be.
