Key takeaways from from the newly formed Building Energy Exchange:
Director Richard Yancey said the agency will examine what types of energy retrofits are suitable for specific classes of buildings and then act as an educational resource center for building owners and real estate developers. The group is part of the city's energy retrofit accelerator, a key initiative in effort by Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City Council to cut carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050.
"Efficient lighting is the gateway drug to energy efficiency," Yancey said in an interview. "We will expand our curriculum to include other forms of energy efficiency."
Mesa said educating building owners as to what types of efficiency work best and which are most cost-effective for their given buildings will move the city toward its emissions goals more quickly.
